Invasive Species

چکیده

Invasive species are characterized by their substantial population growth and spread outside their native ranges. Humans originally introduced most of today’s invasive species, and all regions on Earth have been affected by invasive species to some extent. Curiously, 90% or more of introduced species do not become invasive pests; rather, they die out or rely on direct human assistance to achieve limited persistence outside their native ranges (Williamson 1996). Of course, many introduced species benefi t humans by providing sources of food or fi ber, but those that become invasive are extremely costly to society (Ewel et al. 1999). One recent study estimated that invasive species are costing as much as $137 billion per year in losses in the United States alone (Pimentel et al. 2000). Furthermore, invasive species threaten native species with extinction (Wilcove et al. 1998) and alter crucial ecosystem functions such as freshwater fl ow in streams (vanWilgen et al. 1996). Although it is diffi cult to assign a monetary cost to these impacts, they have serious implications for humans because we rely on a diversity of species and ecosystem services for our survival.

The effects of climate change on the distribution of an invasive fish in Iran: Gambusia holbrooki (Girard, 1859)

Today, invasive species are considered as one of the major threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The suitable habitats of these species are expected to be expanded under the effects of future climate change hence it is likely to threaten the existence of native species. Consequently, identifying the current and potential distribution range of invasive species is essential for managem...

The embryology of Ailanthus altissima (Simaroubaceae): an invasive species from Iran

Simaroubaceae is a monophyletic family in the order Sapindales with 22 genera and 109 species. Ailanthus altissima (Mill) Swingle, also known as the tree of heaven, is a highly invasive species, which systematically belongs to Simaroubaceae. Reproductive characteristics are essential for the deployment and maintenance of invasive species in new environments and examination of the reproductive s...

Identification of Invasive Species Using Remote Sensing and Vegetation Indices, (Case Study: Vazroud Rangelands, Iran)

Biological invasions form a major threat to the provision of ecosystems productsand services and can affect ecosystems across a wide spectrum of bioclimatic conditions. Therefore, it is important to systematically monitor the spread of species over broad regions. Ithas long been recognized that remote sensing and geographical information system couldcontribute to this capacity. This paper aims t...

Species distribution modelling of invasive alien species; Pterois miles for current distribution and future suitable habitats

The present study aims to predict the potential geographic distribution and future expansion of invasive alien lionfish (Pterois miles) with ecological niche modelling along the Mediterranean Sea. The primary data consisted of occurrence points of P. miles in the Mediterranean and marine climatic data layers were collected from global databases. All the used models run 100% su...

The impact of invasive species Leucanthemum vulgare Lam. on vegetation characteristics of Fandoghlou rangelands in Namin county, Ardabil , Iran

Presence of invasive species on rangelands is a degradation sign. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of invasive species Leucanthemum vulgare Lam. on the structural and functional characteristics of Fandoghlou rangelands in the Namin county of Ardabil province. The model used for sampling was the stratified random systematic. Two main sites with the presence and absence of L. vul...
